et al. Human brain imaging and the role of attention regulation. Neuron. 96 : 1143-1159 Our current understanding of the role of the cerebral cortex in the human species has focused primarily on the visual system. For example, it has been hypothesized that the visual system is inextricably woven into the circuitry of the basal ganglia, as well as by some other areas of the brain. Here we used fMRI to investigate whether a significant role for the visual system has also emerged in a number of other functions such as language and learning; however, we focused on language rather than learning, since most studies have specifically examined the visual and motor systems.

Mayer J.L. An algorithm for predicting complex object features from facial facial motion. Nat. Neurosci. 18 : 918-922 Although the human visual system serves many other functions, including speech perception, it is the visual systems underlying perception of movement (specifically vision) that is thought to be the most fundamental. Visual processing occurs within the visual cortex after the initiation of sensory input (). This results in the formation of an individual’s first perception of an object (such as an object in front of one’s eyes) based on their visual processing. In turn, this first perception of an object and subsequent responses to that object in the form of attentional demands on that object are the basis for the acquisition of higher levels of awareness of that object and a complex set of mental states.

We began by generating an fMRI template using the standard procedure (). To generate the stimuli, we selected high-magnification images in which the eyes were closed, which served as a more sensitive template for the subject’s gaze and response to the same stimulus. During the whole experiment, all the subjects were seated in an MRI apparatus. An eye tracking system (OptoFVIII) that measures the subject’s gaze direction at all
